Seeing the Forest for the Trees

P and I went for a walk at a park down the street from my house. I’d been to the park on several different occasions, but I had no idea that there was a hidden wooded area just BEHIND the park. It was really beautiful. There were several old light posts back there, and they were very cool. I don’t know what used to be back there, but whatever it was, there’s no tell-tale signs left, other than the cool light posts and a small, single cement slab. I’d love to go back and sit there and read, but with it being so secluded from the view of the rest of the park, it’d be kinda creepy.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. P always comes up with interesting places for me to take pictures; this was no exception. You can check out the photos I took on my Flickr account: Set- Randol Mill Park.

Yesterday, I mentioned on Facebook, that I was making Valentines. The kit I bought only came with 6 and I needed more than that. Unfortunately, the kit I bought was the only one at the store (Jo-Ann Fabrics), so I figured I would try to find another kit somewhere else.

Having dropped off several things to be framed at a store in south Arlington, and (ironically*) having just eaten lunch at Chick Fil-A, I was near a Hobby Lobby, which I normally make a concerted effort to avoid at all costs (as do my friends). I say ‘concerted’ because, though I am not what I would consider a “militant” ‘mo, as a general rule of thumb, I don’t spend my money in anti-gay (read Christian) establishments (with the exception of Chick Fil-A, but their nuggets are like crack, so they’re the exception); Hobby Lobby being one, Cracker Barrel being another, and so on. However, since I was near and I hadn’t been there in years, I figured ‘what the hell.’ (more…)

Mental Goulash XVI

I have several little rants to get off my chest, then tomorrow, we can move on to more secular ones (so to speak).

• As you may or may not know, I’m no child advocate. I don’t eat them or lure them to my gingerbread house (anymore), but as a rule, I’m not a kid fan. This isn’t to say that I wish them harm (often), I just don’t like them in a box. I do not like them with a fox. I do not like them in a house. I do not like them with a mouse. You get the idea. It’s like that old joke about lawyers: What do you call 100 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start. Insert ‘children’ for lawyers and you get the picture.

A friend and I were trying to hang something from the ceiling, but we didn’t have a ladder tall enough. So, like an idiot, someone had the bright idea of putting the stepladder on top of the dining room table…the glass dining room table. Well, my friend got UP the ladder successfully, though there was initially some sliding of the stepladder’s legs and some unsettling, straining sounds coming from the glass table. However, as my friend began descending the ladder, he overstepped the last rung, onto the edge of the glass table, which caused a large rounded break to take place on the edge of the table top (envision a ‘bite’ like that taken out of an apple). Upon doing this, he lost his balance, the foot that overstepped, having nowhere to go, went back into the the very sharp, open void of the newly broken glass and severed his foot about 5 inches below the bottom of the big toe. All I remember hearing is a sickening wet ‘thud.’ (more…)

Finds of All Kinds

I‘m psyched about going to an estate sale this morning. It’s weird how groovy old homes can be so close and yet you never see them. Well, I say groovy like I’ve actually been there, though I’ve only seen the interior of the home (and its contents) via an e-mail. I’m on several estate sale e-mail lists and this one in particular, includes images with their e-mails. I’m hoping that the books & records (shown) will prove fruitful. I also have my eye on a screen (shown), but I’m not holding my breath on that one.

It’s supposed to rain today and tomorrow, which always makes me happy. Ironically, I started feeling anything but, late last night. I’m not sure what brought it on, but whatever the case, I texted P and cancelled our dinner plans. He’s very busy. I don’t feel up to it. Either way, I wouldn’t be much fun to be around. And one must be ‘fun’ at all times, mustn’t one? And the stupid part is, I still want to hang out with him, but I know if I did, it would be uncomfortable and I’d feel like I needed to be more interactive than I’d want to be. It’s not necessary to fill every void with blather. Sometimes, silence really is golden. Silence does not always = problem.

I’ve been wanting to see Sherlock Holmes before it leaves theaters, so I might go do that later today. I told myself the same thing yesterday, then went back to bed. (more…)

Rear Window Memorial

I‘ve noticed several trends, in regards to cars: car nuts, Calvin, of Calvin & Hobbes fame, peeing on whatever brand of car/truck you AREN’T driving, etc. I’ve even gotten (somewhat) used to retarded bumper stickers, some of which I have no idea what the message is the driver is trying to convey. For example, I saw one yesterday with a Darwin fish symbol, with feet, upside down and next to it, it said: “Fish don’t have feet and Jesus still lives!” (WTF? I don’t get it) -or- (my favorite) “If you can read this, you weren’t aborted.” Duh. Ah, Texas. Someone somewhere is making a mint off these idiots. (more…)
