To Dye For

P came over the other night and we dyed Easter eggs. It was fun, but I miss the Paas I grew up with (they looked more like the image above). Actually, I have fond memories of several different types of egg dyeing experiences: I remember when we used to just use good old food coloring and some vinegar to dye eggs with. That was a lot of fun, plus it was fun to make all your colors from the instructions printed on the box of food coloring: _ drops of red + _ drops of yellow= orange…_ drops of blue + _ drops of red= purple, etc.

The Lavender Screen: The Gay and Lesbian Films–Their Stars, Makers, Characters, and Critics by Boze Hadleigh © 2001
Synopsis: Tracing the origins and evolution of films with gay and lesbian characters and themes from the 1930s to their present proliferation, The Lavender Screen offers a startling review of more than 100 films, evaluating not only themes, but the director’s attitudes and public and critical commentary as well.
Comments: Having loved documentaries like The Celluloid Closet and The Lavender Screen, I knew I had to have this book when I saw it. Really fascinating and surprisingly thorough. I say surprising because it even included more mainstream movies that were either inspired by gay characters, but done as straight films in order to appease the masses and/or films that have homoerotic undertones, but are not necessarily considered ‘gay’ movies (Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope and Strangers on a Train to name a few). GREAT book. Reminded me what gay movies (characters) I LOVE (The Sum of Us, Queen’s Logic) …and which ones make my blood boil (To Lie With Dogs, Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss, and Jeffrey, just to name a few). Don’t EVEN get me started!

YoVille

Okay, I admit it, I’m kinda addicted to Facebook’s YoVille. YoVille is a virtual world where you can create your identity (physical appearance, clothing, etc.) and live among other virtual YoVillians. You collect a paycheck every 6 hours and can in turn use that money to buy food, furniture for you apartment, etc. It’s fun…well some of it is.

Naturally, I enjoy buying furniture and decorating my apartment. However, trying to interact with other people on YoVille is pretty much useless. I find it amusing that even virtual people can be vapid and materialistic. Perfect example: I checked out the ‘Events’ calendar and went to a virtual party for ’30-Somethings.’ The first thing I see when I go in is some virtual guy whose named himself “rich man,” talking to all these virtual girls about how much he makes ($75,000 a year). Naturally, virtual me couldn’t resist going over and saying “I have $8.” Of course, I’m the only one who finds this amusing. I’m greeted by “that’s sad” from some virtual chick. I’m sure these people are equally as titillating in real life. NOT.

So, if you’re on Facebook, feel free to swing by my place (and if you do come by, rate my room; bottom left-hand corner). The door is usually unlocked. And for those who either aren’t on Facebook and/or have no interest in joining/playing YoVille, here’s a looksee at my pad. (more…)
