I recently paid a visit to a friend’s antique store in the nearby town of Handley, Texas. While I was there, I sat down and went through the tons of vintage Valentines he has to offer. These are the ones I ended up choosing to add to my ephemera collection. I’m also working on scanning and showing you the FIRST batch of Valentines I bought from him earlier this year, but never got around to showing you because of technical problems (see: Blackout ’09 under the ‘Life‘ category).

I like to choose the ones with ‘not the norm’ items/animals/situations you don’t often see on a Valentine card. Thus the apple, possum (my favorite!) and lightning bug choices. The next batch I have to show you include a ghost and a shark among others. Niiice! Also, I enjoy the occasional “mechanical” Valentine (i.e. they ‘move’ because of a brad or some such piece), like the swimming one shown here. The little boy wearing the heart-shaped boxers, “dives” off the diving board. Fun!

The first heart-shaped one at the bottom with the little boy & girl that says ‘Valentine, we could go places together,” I bought for P because he wants us to take a road trip to somewhere neither of us have been to before, which I think sounds like a lot of fun! I love road trips, but I can’t help thinking to myself: ’2 gay men + random small Texas town= Matthew Shepard x 2.” I know I’m being paranoid, but it’s in the back of my mind. Of course, my friend, A, had a one word solution: firearm. LOL!

Also, the one with the little weenie dog (AKA ‘Dachshund’), is for my friend B, who has her own little weenie dog named Porkchop.
