Cinematic Titanic

Last Friday I had the opportunity to go see Cinematic Titanic, live in Dallas. N bought the tickets and he, I and A all went. In addition, some friends from work also went, so we convoyed to the venue, the Lakewood Theater in Dallas.

For those who may not be familiar with Cinematic Titanic, it’s a group of people who “riff” on B (Z?) movies. If it sounds familiar, it should be; the people involved are all from the original incarnation of the cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000, consisting of:

- Joel Hodgson
- Trace Beaulieu (AKA Crow T. Robot, Dr. Forrester)
- J. Elvis Weinstein (AKA Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt)
- Frank Conniff ( AKA TV’s Frank)
and
- Mary Jo Pehl (AKA Pearl Forrester)

I love MST3K, so I was happy to finally get to see 97% of the phenomena live and in person. I especially love Pearl (I wanted to hug her so bad, but I’m sure she’d be like “Um…no. Swine flu and all.”), Joel and Crow, so I felt like an awestruck idiot when I went through the swiftly-moving line after the movie, to get their autographs. I honestly was at a loss for words. All I could do was grin like a Cheshire cat and say ‘thank you.’ Everyone looked so great!

The movie Cinematic Titanic riffed on was the 1978 sci-fi film, The Alien Factor, and wow was it BAD. A perfect choice for the crew to riff on. It was hilarious and in the end, I was glad that I went. It was the pick-me-up I’d been needing lately.

I bought a 11x7ish-sized poster of the movie we saw, for everyone to sign (which they did!) and also an 8×10 silhouetted image of the cast that, had Trace not asked: “Did you want us to sign that too?” I would have stood there with my mouth open like a dummy. LOL! In addition, I also picked up 2 of their DVDs and 2 T-shirts. A good time was had by all.

P.s. I took about half a dozen pictures before my damn digital camera battery died on me (leave it to me to not recharge it after the garage sale!). I took the remaining photos with my iPhone and then the others were taken with N’s digital camera. *To see larger versions of these images, visit my Flickr account: Set- ‘Cinematic Titanic ’09′
