Ah! Bento!

Last weekend, while having Dim Sum with a friend, we started talking about all things Asian. Besides bubble tea (no thank you), we discussed bento boxes. The first time I ever saw a bento box was in The Breakfast Club: it’s what Molly Ringwald’s character had her lunch packed in…unlike Bender’s lunch, which, according to him, Claire was “wearing it.” The dictionary defines a bento box as: a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish. Containers range from disposable mass produced to hand crafted lacquerware. (more…)

Evil Became Them by Pat Root © 1959
Synopsis: (from the back of the book)
Three Sadists…
These were the three Vails, uninhibited, unconventional, unscrupulous…
Phillip, who drank too much to disguise the decadence in his life…
Douglas, who painted weird pictures and delighted in the grotesque…
Lise, who was as beautiful as woman could be, and as deadly.

The Vails built their lives around a morbid pattern of violence and brutality. For them, morality had no meaning; murder itself could become a matter of pride…and when they set out to gain the fortune they believed was rightfully theirs, only one man – a man they believed a coward – dared to stand in their way…

The duel which followed would have delighted the Devil himself.
Comments: How good does this book sound?! I’m loving it so far. I’ll never understand why so many of these great old pulp books aren’t being re-printed with their original cover art. A lost art definitely worth preserving. You won’t find these on Kindle. (more…)

Cinematic Titanic

Last Friday I had the opportunity to go see Cinematic Titanic, live in Dallas. N bought the tickets and he, I and A all went. In addition, some friends from work also went, so we convoyed to the venue, the Lakewood Theater in Dallas.

Awful

Well, I went to visit my mom at the rest home. Apparently she has to be there for 30 days, then be evaluated and see if she qualifies as a “hardship case” so that she can be put in an actual facility that specializes in Alzheimer’s patients. After seeing her yesterday, I don’t know if she’s going to last the 30 days.

Even though my dad had tried to prepare me for what I was going to see, I wasn’t. At all. When we first went to her room, I initially thought maybe she was elsewhere, because the woman in the bed wasn’t my mother. But it was. She was this shriveled, gray-haired woman, sleeping with her mouth open, with an oxygen tube coming from her nose.

I don’t really want to write this because I know it’s a downer and what good is that gonna do me? But, I think maybe getting it out of my system and onto something (somewhat) tangible, might help me deal with it a little better.

I talked to my dad about a week ago and he told me that he was putting my mom in a home. I knew this day was coming, but it’s still something you’re not ever really prepared to hear. So, fast forward another week and he calls the morning of my garage sale. I miss the call because I’m busy with the sale, and don’t notice the caller ID until late Sunday evening (the last day of the sale). I call him Monday and he tells me that he thinks I should come see her, that she’s in the last stages of the disease (Alzheimer’s). Initially I take this news with a grain of salt because of his tendency to be overly dramatic. I tell him I will come to visit her next Friday. (more…)

Goonies Never Say ‘Firm’

I‘m sure one or two of you are wondering how the big estate/garage sale went. Well, I’m happy to report that it went quite well. We made a grand total of $1,253.25. Everyone walked away a little richer and a good time was had by all. I made a $485+! The hard work payed off! Huzzah!

The first day was just E and I, and sales were pretty steady. Day 2, everyone was on board and sales were steady but slowed towards the late afternoon. Then the last day (when everything was half price) it was bananas! We sold SO much stuff! I got rid of all my big furniture items (sofa sleeper, kitchen table/chairs, lamps, etc. Unfortunately, my mom’s clothes weren’t much of a hit, though I did sell more of them than I thought I would.
