Yes, I’m finally getting around to reviewing Sherlock Holmes. I think I was probably the last person amongst my friends that saw it. The consensus was that it was good. I have to agree. Here’s why:
• I loved the visual style. The color palette was a great combination of grays, greens and blacks. The movie posters did it justice as well. I also really enjoyed the editing style in which it showed how Sherlock’s mind worked; how he calculated things, arriving at his conclusions, whether it be clues or how to one-up his opponent.
• I love Jude Law in just about anything. I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for a pretty face. Physically, he does nothing for me, but I’d still molest him if he were in the vicinity. Sexy! I also like Robert Downey, Jr. a lot, but not in the same vein that I did, back in the 80′s. I thought he was the cutest thing EVER in supporting roles in movies like Weird Science and Back to School, heck, even Less Than Zero…to an extent. However, the dynamic changed over the years and while I still enjoy him immensely, it’s more as a personality and/or performer than eyecandy. This isn’t to say he’s not still pretty darn cute, it’s just different now. Maybe it was the drugs thing. I dunno. Whatever the case, he plays a great Sherlock Holmes and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. I think my single favorite moment was when he made some disparaging comment to a police officer about chamber maids…only to have the officer tell him that he married a chamber maid (jokingly, unbeknownst to Sherlock). The look on Downey’s face is priceless. It just hangs there for so long. I laughed out loud.
• I LOVED the opening sequence. The shard of glass took me off guard and creeped me out, setting the mood for what was to come. Nice surprise right out of the gate! I also REALLY loved the villain, Lord Blackwood. He chewed up every scene he was in. Deliciously wicked.
• The only thing I wasn’t too keen on was the choice of the object of Sherlock’s affection, Irene (played by Rachel McAdams). I didn’t buy her as English and felt she was too young. I’ve begrudgingly enjoyed her in other movies, but this one…not so much. She’s alright, but didn’t do it for me. I would have preferred someone like Rachel Weisz in the role. Here’s hoping the casting director isn’t married to McAdams for the sequels. Yes, plural. At least two more sequels are planned! That is, if Andrea Plunket, who controls the remaining U.S. copyrights to the Holmes story, doesn’t withdraw Guy Ritchie’s rights to the Sherlock Holmes story. Apparently there’s issue over alleged homosexual undertones suggesting that there is romantic relationship between the lead characters. Oy, so what? I could seriously give a shit, but I guess those hardcore purist who have a hardon for Holmes are the ones up in arms over this.
Overall, the movie was a lot of fun. I would definitely buy it on DVD. Recommend! Bring on the sequels, I can’t wait to see them!

I think they should have left the chick character altogether! Her presence was so “token”, anyway.
