I watched Angels & Demons with P (another one of my 3 for $20 picks), neither of us having seen it before. P has seen The Da Vinci Code, but I haven’t, though I do want to. I thought I owned it, but I don’t, but I have no doubt I can find a cheapo used copy for under $5. I remember thinking the trailer (for The Da Vinci Code) looked interesting and was intrigued, then all the fun got sucked out of wanting to see the movie because there was SO MUCH DRAMA when it was released. I honestly think more people went to see what the big fuss was about than for the actual film. Though, on the flipside of that coin, the masses love a movie with an identifiable lead (Tom Hanks), so I’m sure that played a role as well (though I could NOT, and still can’t, get past his godawful hair in that movie. Mind-numbingly awful choice by whomever the stylist or costumer was, or whoever makes those decisions).
I REALLY enjoyed Angels & Demons. It was fast-paced enough and filled with enough suspense/action that I was never bored. I loved how all these seemingly innocuous relics suddenly became these multi-faceted clues to this ancient riddle. It was very clever and that made it even more fun. And though on the back cover of the DVD, Larry King exclaims “The twist at the end will blow your mind!”…my mind wasn’t blown. Not to gloat, but I’ve seen enough movies to piece together the (seemingly) obvious, so when I said what I thought was going to happen next (at a key scene towards the end), then it DIDN’T happen, I was a little surprised. However, when it came full circle and what I’d originally said DID end up being what happened, I wasn’t all that surprised. I wonder what this one was like to see in the theater. Were people gasping at the twist? *shrugs*
Overall, an enjoyable movie that I wouldn’t mind seeing again. Definitely not disappointed with its purchase.

P bought this one (3 for $20) over for us to watch. To be honest, I hadn’t thought twice about it, either when it was released in theaters or on DVD, but I had heard nothing but good things about it. I’m not much on ghost stories (some, but not all, ghosts usually fall in the category of zombies and demon possession, for me), but I really like Virginia Madsen and Elias Koteas (was he not the hottest thing about Some Kind of Wonderful? *sigh*). The premise seemed interesting, if not familiar, but I was open to seeing it and must say I was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought it was a great ghost story, without being overly (in my opinion) graphic. It had good suspense elements and I always enjoy the whole ‘Let’s go to the library and look at microfiche!’ scenes (very Amityville Horror {the original, not the shitball remake…sans Ryan Reynold’s hunkalicious bod…DAMN!}). Definitely worth a watch, but you may not want to watch it alone. It might get under your skin, but I’m not mentioning any names. *cough* Recommend!
