When Madonna’s single, Vogue, from her I’m Breathless album (music from and inspired by the film Dick Tracy), originally premiered in 1990, I fell in love with it. THEN, after seeing the video, I fell in love with “Slam.” Slam’s real name is Salim Gauwloos, and he was the face in Madonna’s Vogue video. Perfect in every way. That nose! BEAUTIFUL! *sigh* (more…)

Quantum Kirk: White Lines

While attending college, I made assorted acquaintances (I hesitate calling them friends). One of them was a girl named ‘Stacy.’ I actually liked Stacy quite a lot. She was a very cool person, but like a lot of cool people I’ve met over the years, she made bad choices.

Stacy had the distinction of being my first (and come to think of it, ONLY) lesbian friend. We had a few classes together and would occasionally hang out outside of school. We would mostly go clubbing together and that’s where she met her girlfriend, “Renee.” In all honestly, I wasn’t too wild about her, but she always managed to get us into all the hottest clubs, no matter how long the line was, AND once inside, she and her guests (that included me) were treated like VIPs. I never really gave much thought as to the how or whys, I just sat back and enjoyed the ride. (more…)

Recently, while at Half Price Books, I bought a 4-disc DVD set titled Crypt of Terror: Horror From South of the Border (Vol.1). Though I’m not a huge fan of retro Mexican cinema (with the exception of the Santo vs… movies), the majority of the movies contained in this 6 movie collection, were all made in the 80′s, and I love me some 80′s! Plus, most are slasher-style movies (with a dash of the supernatural), so that was a big selling point too. (more…)

Ever-hopeful, I recently signed up for what has turned out to be my final attempt at meeting gay men: I downloaded the Gay Men’s Social Network app for the iPad.

As I write more and more installments of Quantum Kirk (and trust me, we’ve just scratched the surface!), it dawned on me that everything has come full circle: I’m still, however much I hate to use the word, optimistically, trying to grasp the elusive brass cockring.

Documenting my extensive, yet comical, experiences looking for love in all the wrong places, I’m sure to the reader-come-lately it looks as if I’ve been looking too hard and that if I merely stop, that’s when it’ll *happen*! I’d say a hiatus of roughly 10 years is a pretty good head start…and finish.

But let me get back to how I arrived at my inevitable conclusion.

As I scrolled through roughly 15 dozen gay men (via the GMSN app), ranging in distance from 1-300 miles, it felt like deja view all over again. It’s all about anonymous sex. It’s all about prerequisites. It’s all a monumental waste of my time and energy…yet again. (more…)

Quantum Kirk Meet Quantum Jerk

Then there was “Chip.” Chip worked at a car dealership. Our phone conversation seemed pleasant enough and he seemed eager to meet…for dinner. The word ‘dinner,’ in relationship to blind dating, should be a 4-letter word. I was content with meeting him at Uncle Julio’s (Fort Worth’s answer to Tex-Mex), but he insisted on picking me up. I soon found out why.

Chip arrives, we have some small talk in the apartment and I offer to drive, since he came all the way from Dallas. Chip gets solemn for a moment and asks me if I have a CD player in my car. Being 1991, I was still scraping by with a cassette player. This made Chip grimace. He responded with, “Let’s take my car. The sound of cassette cases rattling drives me crazy.” My eyes glazed for a moment. Fleeting thoughts of ‘what a jackass’ and ‘is he serious?’ ran through my mind. I said “Um, alright.” (more…)

Whorled Peas

Yesterday afternoon I went to my first vegan restaurant. I’d heard of Spiral Diner, but I’d never been there.

First off, the place is in a very cute, old area of south Fort Worth. I loved the interior’s decor. It was very retro-cool. I especially liked the lighting choices (sconces, ceiling fans, etc.).

The employees were nice and I didn’t think the service was bad, but doing some research online, and reading the reviews, apparently those have been consistent issues. And though that wasn’t my experience, looking at all the cool characters both eating and working there, I can totally see how that could be a problem. In all honesty, I felt like I wasn’t cool enough to be there, but then I used to feel that way when Sound Warehouse was around, and now at Hot Topic, but I digress. *Click here to see the owners {seated} and you’ll get an idea of how “awesome” they seem to think they are. I’m sorry, but when you’re “too cool” to smile in your own publicity photos, a scarlet letter ‘D‘ (for douchebag) appears on your forehead. (more…)
