Our Idiot Brother- I rented this because of my love for Paul Rudd.
Synopsis: A comedy centered on an idealist who barges into the lives of his three sisters.
First off, if you saw the trailer, it was pretty misleading, in my opinion. The trailer makes the film seem as if the film is going to be about this wacky misfit brother and his inability to navigate within the real world. Well, it’s partly right. Less wacky and more story…lots of story. This movie is about family dynamics. (more…)
I went to see the Jean-Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art* yesterday, with my friend Erik. It was brilliant.
Though I, myself, am not what I would consider fashion forward, I do love eyecandy in all its guises. So, it goes without saying that I was in awe of so many of the pieces. And although I grew up in the age of Madonna and her cone bra phenomena, I wasn’t so enraptured by the things I knew about, but more so about the things I hadn’t seen before and/or the newer designs.
My knowledge of Gaultier is more pop culture-based than fashion-based, so it was a real pleasure to get to see the clothes up close and personal. The detail is incredible and I’ve always been a fan of Gaultier’s “outside the box” approach to design and what constitutes it. Very Pop. (more…)

I‘ve been meaning to share this gem with you ever since Christmas. I received this on Christmas Eve, whilst parked in the parking lot of the local mall. Once I’d paid on my Dillard’s card, I came back to find this under my windshield wiper. Apparently the seasoned criminal has a boner for the lid from a box of Office Max printer paper. Yeah. That was the “property in plain view”…in the passenger seat of my car.
You know what’d be really nice? If the police would be remotely this vigilant the other 11 months of the year. Instead, they waste resources and time doing stupid shit like this. *sigh*

Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark- First off, for those who don’t know, this is a remake of a 1973 made-for-TV movie. I remember seeing the original one late afternoon and it creeped me OUT. It was definitely suspenseful, but not so much that I understand the cult status it’s received ever since its airing. I think the fact that it wasn’t available on VHS or DVD for decades added to its mystique. All in all though, it was scary and good. I wish I could say the same for the remake.
Synopsis: A young girl sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own. (more…)

• Parade Individual Frozen Pizza
Comment: My new favorite grocery store carries a brand I hadn’t seen since childhood. Like most childhood favorites, it may be regional, so you may never have heard of it, but it’s called Parade. It’s not so much that I (as a child) associated it with anything related to quality/value, but more-so because I liked the logo and saw it either at our house or my grandma’s house. Decades later, I still love the logo and now know that it DOES mean quality and value. I’ve bought their brand of butter (beautiful package design, btw), hot chocolate, tomato sauce and other assorted items, all with good results. My most recent was their frozen pizzas. (more…)
I have fond memories of being dropped off at the gas station (across from the Safeway) and playing their tabletop version of this game. I loved it more than Pac-Man, though it’s basically the same thing, but instead of ghosts, you have a different insect nemesis each level, whom you try to avoid whilst eating the daisies (in lieu of dots). OMG, SO fun and addictive. Oh, and instead of fruit, the bonuses were assorted vegetables. Love it! (more…)
So I was running into the grocery store to pick up a few things before heading home to hibernate. When I got to the sliding double doors of the front of the store, it was blocked: On the left, an employee with a trail of carts; on the right, a woman wheeling out her cartload of groceries. I stepped aside (in front of the row of carts) to let her pass, so that I could then head inside myself, when goofy (Guardian of the Carts/The Cart Whisperer) looks at me, brow furled and says “I wouldn’t do that if I were you, sir. It could prove dangerous.” Mystified, I said “Do what?” He then motions to the 6 inches of space between the left side of the door opening and the row of carts he was guarding, and proceeds to school me on how trying to enter that way could prove dangerous. Initially speechless at the absurdity, it was then that my expression turned to stoic disbelief, as I said “Um, I wasn’t planning on doing that. I’m standing here, so that this woman can exit and I can enter.” I didn’t even bother bringing up the fact that it was a theoretical implausibility. Fuckin’ IDIOT! (more…)

I recently had the fortune of having a day off AND having the funds to go to the movies (what?! That’s crazy talk!). Yes! It’s true! So, I finally got to see the new Sherlock Holmes film, which I’ve been looking forward to ever since I saw the trailer months ago.
Having LOVED the first film (I own the DVD, digital copy and score) and watched it several times, I was surprised that I was less than enthusiastic about the new film’s trailer. I mean, I LOVE Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law, but (1) I wasn’t wild that someone from the “Girl” movies (…Dragon Tattoo, …Played With Fire, …Hornet’s Nest ad nauseam) was going to be in it (it seemed a little too mainstream/Oprah Book Club for my tastes) and (2) the villain seemed “meh”; a ginger madman just doesn’t carry the same punch as malevolent mancandy, Lord Blackwood in the original.
